Ever-Changing Reflection

Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding... It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self. Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquility.

Extreme Me Makeover

{ae filkins}

Amber over at .{aefilkins}. has started a wonderful post revolution for us busy ladies called Extreme Makeover: Me Edition! I am looking forward to participating (although it seems geared toward moms, which I am not) because since moving into the house with Jed and Morris, I've been crazy playing "housewife." I spend a lot of time keeping up with the house, taking care of Morris and keeping an eye on Jed to make sure he's eating well. I used to be really good at taking care of me because... well, that's all I had to take care of! Even in college, when I was super busy with classes, homework and working... I managed to take care of an apartment, my friends and save some time for myself! So, I'm trying to get back to that point now.

Amber's question today is: How are you being a healthy role model for your children? Well, I don't have any children, but I do have a boyfriend who needs a little encouragement now and then.

I try to cook healthy and interesting dinners whenever I can, always with vegetables (hard to do when someone thinks potatoes are vegetables!) and lean meat. I use heart-healthy olive oil instead of butter or other fats. I drink milk with my dinner, eat whole grains and yogurt for breakfast, make sandwiches with whole-wheat bread for lunch, buy fresh fruit for snacks and drink lots of water. Is it working? Eh, it's a battle.

For exercise... I'm trying, but it's tough to fit it into the schedule. Over the summer, I took a Zumba class every week and tried to do some Yoga once a week. I also walk the dog at least once a day, and I always invite Jed along if he's home -- I usually get a big negative on that one.

We also try to get eight hours of sleep a night, which is really important for weight maintenance and overall health.

I know we have a long way to go, but I'm seeing some progress, which is encouraging.

You are an inspiration! My Husband and I both think potatoes are a vegetable :) We do go to the gym about 4 days a week, but I'm still getting fat. Go figure.

KLaw, all that painting should be toning you up! It's a major workout!

Thanks ladies for the kind words! Yes, the Zumba classes were super fun, but they kicked my a$$! You seriously burn about 600 calories an hour if you keep up. I highly recommend it.

Sounds like you're doing great! I've heard Zumba is a really fun class to take. It seems like everybody is doing it...so, I'm guessing I'll have to take the plunge and give it a try soon!
